Haz Mat for Hospitals Operations Level (Module 1)
Description:
Objectives:
- Verbalize definitions of basic hazardous materials terms.
- Apply basic hazard and risk assessment techniques to stimulated hazardous materials incidents.
- Discuss the aspects of control, containment, and confinement within your resources.
- Discuss understanding of relevant standard operating procedures and termination of an event procedures.
This module is content-rich but can be boring. We address use of the Hospital Incident Command System in managing a hazardous materials emergency, toxicology, flammability, and other physical and chemical properties. This module also introduces the students to the Job Action Sheets, evacuation vs shelter-in-place, response alternatives, and the "go" "no-go" decision-making based on limitations of training, equipment, and protocols. The use of, and relationships with outside organizations is also discussed.
When discussing the chemical and physical properties we use xylene as an example and use the ATSDR Medical Management Guidelines, ERG, NIOSH Pocket Guide, and MSDS to find and interpret data about the chemical by filling out a HARM Worksheet. The class is then broken into groups where they are given similar resources for different chemicals and fill out the HARM Worksheet. The groups report back to the class on the key characteristics and hazards of the chemical.
